The English Opening

This opening for White begins with the moves 1. c4 e5. This symmetrical position often leads to a battle for control of the d4 and d5 squares and the e4 and e5 pawns. Both sides develop their minor pieces in a flexible manner, retaining the possibility of attacking either wing.
