Description

The exchange variation of the Caro-Kann defense begins with the moves 1.e4 c6 2.d4 d5 3.exd5 cxd5. Black allows White to capture the central d-pawn but gains a strong point on d5 for the knight and light-squared bishop. The positions resulting from the exchange variation often lead to dynamic play with chances for both sides to attack. White must find ways to make use of the advantage in space while Black seeks counterplay against White's central control. The exchange variation of the Caro-Kann is a sharp opening that leads to complex positions.
