Here Black plays 3...c5, striking at the base of White's pawn center and preparing to meet 4. cxd5 with 4...cxd4, forking White's central pawns. White will need to find a way to protect them, often by playing 5. Nc3. The Advanced French leads to dynamic play with chances for both sides to attack.
