Description

The Giuoco Piano is a common opening in chess that begins with the moves 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4. This opening is also known as the Italian Game and is named for the Italian masters who popularized it in the 16th century. The Giuoco Piano is characterized by its focus on controlling the center of the board and developing pieces quickly. The bishop on c4 exerts pressure on the f7 square, which is often a weak point in Black's position. White can then castle kingside and prepare for an attack on the Black king. Black has several options for responding to the Giuoco Piano, including the 3...Bc5 "classical" variation, the 3...Nf6 "Two Knights Defense", and the 3...d6 "Old Steinitz" defense. The Giuoco Piano is a popular opening at all levels of play and has been played by many famous grandmasters throughout history.
