Description

The Queen's Gambit begins 1.d4 d5. This is one of the most common openings at all levels of chess. White offers a pawn sacrifice to occupy and control the center. Black has several ways to accept the gambit, including 2...dxc4, 2...c5, and 2...e6. Accepting the gambit with 2...dxc4 gives White a spatial advantage and an active position for the pieces. Declining the gambit with 2...c5 or 2...e6 leads to positions where both sides fight for control of the d4 square and the e4 outpost. The Queen's Gambit often leads to closed, strategic positions with chances for both players to attack depending on how Black chooses to meet White's opening moves.
