Description
The Sicilian Accelerated Dragon is an aggressive and dynamic opening for Black in response to White's standard first moves in the game of chess. After the common opening 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6, Black allows White to construct what appears to be a formidable center formation with pawns placed on the d4 and e4 squares.
However, despite conceding space in the center, Black is able to launch a fierce counterattack against White's central duo of pawns. By fianchettoing the bishop on g7, Black gains time to complete development and aim the bishop at the critical d4 square. Meanwhile, Black's knight is headed to the active c5-square, where it eyes the d4-pawn and helps support an eventual d5-push.
Rather than meekly defending the center, Black plays actively and seeks counterplay on the queenside with moves like ...b5 and ...Bb7. White's space advantage in the center often becomes a liability, as Black obtains a lead in development and seizes the initiative. The Accelerated Dragon leads to dynamic, complex positions full of possibilities for both sides. Black assumes some risk in this sharp variation but obtains good chances for victory in return.
