Description
The Sicilian Najdorf is one of the most respected and deeply studied openings in chess. After the initial moves 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 g6, Black has established a strong pawn center, fianchettoed the bishop on g7, and developed the knight actively on f6. This setup forms the basis of the Najdorf variation.
White has many options to try and gain an advantage, including 6. Bc4, 6. Bg5, 6. Be2, and 6. f4. Black also has many options in response, and extensive theory has been developed. The Najdorf often leads to sharp, tactical play with chances for both sides to attack. It is a popular choice at all levels, from beginners to world champions, and has been played at the highest levels for decades.
