Description

The Taimanov variation of the Sicilian defense in chess begins with the moves 1. e4 c5 2. Nf3 d6 3. d4 cxd4 4. Nxd4 Nf6 5. Nc3 e6. Black allows White to establish a strong center with pawns on d4 and e4 but then undermines it immediately with ...e6 and ...d5. Black's light-squared bishop has developed actively on b7, eyeing the long diagonal. The Taimanov variation leads to sharp, tactical play where both sides have chances to attack. White must find ways to defend the center and counterattack against Black's aggressive setup.
